“Nehru Made Sure He Met Danny”
The Bulletin – Jun 15, 1954
Mr. Nehru, Indian Prime Minister, dislikes parties. But he went out of his way to get an invitation to one yesterday—to meet Danny Kaye.
The party, honouring Danny, was given by Mr. Nehru’s sister. Madame Pandit, president of the United Nations General Assembly.
When she sent out invitations she did not send one to Mr. Nehru because she knew he usually prefers to avoid parties.
But when he heard Danny was going to be there Mr. Nehru is reported to have telephoned his sister at the last minute and asked for an invitation.
Afterwards Danny described it as “one swell party.” He sat sipping fruit juice, in accordance with the Indian Government observance of prohibition.
While in India he will make a film about Indian waifs for the United Nations.
